Instead of clicking around, edit all configurations in a single file of system commands.
This article provides screen images and background discussion to the automated script that overrides various macOS default configuration settings.
NOTE: This (and all other content on this website) expresses my personal opinion and not from any employer, past or present.
https://github.com/wilsonmar/mac-setup/blob/master/macos_config.zsh
Links in each section within the above script correspond to sections in this page.
We’ll be going from top-left to bottom-right on the System Preferferences GUI obtained by clicking the Apple icon at the top-left corner of every screen or pressing control + command + , (comma) :
These customizations made my life easier, less annoying, and more secure.
They make for less distractions when working on team programming.
Zsh SheBang heading
Notice the script file name is “zsh” rather than “sh”, because Apple switched to Zsh as the default.
#!/usr/bin/env zsh
# ~/.macos — https://mths.be/macos
# Ask for the administrator password upfront
sudo -v
# Keep-alive: update existing `sudo` time stamp until `.macos` has finished
while true; do sudo -n true; sleep 60; kill -0 "$$" || exit; done 2>/dev/null &
Different Commands
Different commands are run in the Terminal.app prompt:
sudo commands require a password to be entered.
osascript commands
defaults write commands
scutil commands
PROTIP: The same environment variable can be used by different commands:
# Set computer name (as done via System Preferences → Sharing)
COMPUTER_NAME="0x6D746873"
#sudo scutil --set ComputerName "${COMPUTER_NAME}"
#sudo scutil --set HostName "${COMPUTER_NAME}"
#sudo scutil --set LocalHostName "${COMPUTER_NAME}"
#sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server NetBIOSName -string "${COMPUTER_NAME}"
CAUTION: Many commands behave differently in one version of macOS vs. other versions.

Download the 1.3 MB 2880x1494 High Sierra image of orange Fall foliage shimmering over a lake beneath an icy mountain. From http://osxdaily.com/2017/06/13/get-macos-high-sierra-default-wallpaper/
An 2880x1500 image from Apple at https://images.apple.com/macos/high-sierra-preview/overview/beta/image_large_2x.jpg
NOTE : Because the tilde shortcut does not get expanded in osascript arguments, substitute “wilsonmar” with your Mac user name in this command:
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to set desktop picture to "/Users/wilsonmar/Pictures/wallpapers/macOS-High-Sierra-Wallpaper-2880x1494.jpg" as POSIX file'
There is no confirmation, the wallpaper will just change instantly.

Login screen background
For those who are willing to turn off Security & Privacy -> FileVault:
this VIDEO shows how to change the Login Screen background on macOS Monterey from its purple default. Get your account UUID and create a folder with that name after going to $HOME/Caches and creating folder “Desktop Pictures”. Inside that folder, add an image named lockscreen.png , such as a default wallpaper downloaded from https://512pixels.net/projects/default-mac-wallpapers-in-5k/ which archives every major version of Mac OS X and macOS (up to Monterey Beta), in 5K and 6K (6016x6016) Extreme Dynamic Range (XDR) resolutions. They have both Day and Night pictures starting from 10.14 Mojave, which introduced a new system-wide Dark Mode.
Restart.
